Even though citations and references work by providing the sources’ information, they have some differences. Citation informs the readers regarding the root origination of the information. Here, the citing of the source of information is done. While referencing is the extension of citation style. It provides the readers with the details about the source from where the matter has been taken. Readers get a good understanding of the kind of source and can also find the source by themselves. References are generally provided at the end of the paper. At the same time, this may not be the case with citation. Citation and referencing both include the name of the source(s) and the year of the publication of the source(s), but with varying styles. When one provides the information regarding the source of the report, he/she should state the names of the author and the date on which the article was published. When one provides references, they give the information about the author, book, article, all the end of the paper. The sources are put at the end of the page, on a separate sheet in alphabetical order. The ordering is done as per the last name of the author. The following example gives proforma of this: Brown, N.H. Hills, Michael. 2010. 121: 1-7. In citations, when the source of information in the report has been cited, one should give various parentheses that satisfy or match with the sources. The correspondence of the sources should be in an alphabetical manner. The references should be properly listed in citations. On the other hand, with references, the listing can be both alphabetically and with numbers depending upon the type of format, one wants to follow for referring to any book or article.

The ordering system, while giving citations and references, goes with certain differences. In the Citation-order, white one provides the source of information in the paper, he should emphasize putting the number of brackets that should align with the number of sources listed. The listing has to be the order in which they have appeared in the report; the sources listed at the first go with [1], the next one goes with [2], etc.

In references, the listing of sources is done based on the order in which they have been cited in the report. In a nutshell, we can state that citations provide the basic source of information, while references provide the complete source of information. The purpose of citation is to show the source of information taken, and reference criticizes the point expressed in the paper.
